Comments on “the First Detections of the Extragalactic Background Light at 3000, 5500, and 8000 Å” by Bernstein, Freedman and Madore

چکیده
A critical discussion is presented of the data analysis applied by Bernstein, Freedman, & Madore (2002a,b) in their measurement of the Extragalactic Background Light. There are questionable assumptions in the analysis of the ground-based observations of the Zodiacal Light. The modeling of the Diffuse Galactic Light is based on an underestimated value of the dust column density along the line of sight. Comparison with the previously presented results from the same observations reveals a puzzling situation: in spite of a large difference in the atmospheric scattered light corrections the derived Extragalactic Background Light values are exactly the same. The claim of the paper of a “detection of the Extragalactic Background Light” appears premature. Subject headings: diffuse radiation – techniques: photometric – dust, extinction

The First Detections of the Extragalactic Background Light at 3000, 5500, and 8000å (ii): Measurement of Foreground Zodiacal Light
We present a measurement of the absolute surface brightness of the zodiacal light (3900–5100Å) toward a fixed extragalactic target at high ecliptic latitude based on moderate resolution (∼1.3Å per pixel) spectrophotometry obtained with the du Pont 2.5m telescope at Las Campanas Observatory in Chile. This measurement and contemporaneous Hubble Space Telescope data from WFPC2 and FOS comprise a c...
متن کاملCorrections of Errors in ‘ The First Detections of the Extragalactic
We correct errors in Bernstein, Freedman & Madore (2002abc), a series of papers in which we described observations of the optical extragalactic background light (EBL). These errors pertain to the measurement of zodiacal light, given in the second paper of this series. Making these corrections leads to a net decrease of 0.5(±0.6)% in our zodiacal light measurement and a corresponding increase in...
متن کاملThe First Detections of the Extragalactic Background Light at 3000, 5500, and 8000å (iii): Cosmological Implications
We have used the Hubble Space Telescope Wide–Field and Planetary Camera 2, in combination with ground–based spectroscopy, to measure the integrated flux of galaxies at optical wavelengths — the extragalactic background light (EBL). We have also computed the integrated light from individual galaxy counts in the images used to measure the EBL and in the Hubble Deep Field. We find that flux in gal...
متن کاملThe First Detections of the Extragalactic Background Light at 3000, 5500, and 8000å (i): Results
We present the first detection of the mean flux of the optical extragalactic background light (EBL) at 3000, 5500, and 8000Å. Diffuse foreground flux at these wavelengths comes from terrestrial airglow, dust– scattered sunlight (zodiacal light), and dust–scattered Galactic starlight (diffuse Galactic light). We have avoided the brightest of these, terrestrial airglow, by measuring the absolute ...
متن کاملThe 1 μm discontinuity in the Extragalactic Background Light spectrum: an artefact of foreground subtraction
Several recent papers claim the detection of a near infrared Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) intensity at 1.25 4 μm that exceeds the integrated light of galaxies by factors of > 3. When combined with a claimed optical detection of the EBL at 0.80 μm the EBL excess emission spectrum has a discontinuity at ∼ 1μm. This discontinuity has given rise to an interpretation in terms of ultraviolet ...
